Rationale Sun Protection

Dr Cooper uses and recommends Rationale Sun Protection  for protection against skin cancer.

Rationale Sun Protection is an affordable range of sun protection products, formulated and manufactured in Australia for Australian conditions. It's based on nanonised zinc oxide - a revolutionary technology that makes zinc's broad spectrum protection invisible for the first time.

Rationale Sun Protection nanonised zinc provides protection from both the ageing UVA spectrum and the burning UVB spectrum in lightweight, non-greasy formulations that make it easy to wear sunscreen everyday. Rationale Sun Protection contains absolutely no chemical blockers, which means it's great for the most sensitive and allergy-prone skin.

All Rationale Sun Protection products are:

  • made using only nanonised zinc oxide as the active ingredient
  • hypoallergenic - suitable for the most sensitive skin
  • effective Broad Spectrum Protection against UVA I, UVA II & UVB radiation
  • tested to stringent Australian standards
  • free from carbon-based (chemical) sunscreens

More about nanonised zinc oxide...

Broad Spectrum UV protection

Rationale Sun Protection provides up to SPF30+ protection using only nanonised zinc oxide. All our products are tested to strict Australian standards, to provide great protection against skin cancer and photo-ageing. Zinc remains the only sunscreen active that effectively protects against both UVA [320-380nm] and UVB [280-320 nm] radiation. That gives you a defence against the widest range of UV damage.

Nanonised Zinc

Nanonised zinc oxide is the only active ingredient used in Rationale Sun Protection . Average particle size is just 30nm. Nanonised zinc is completely transparent to visible light, yet opaque to most UV radiation. Nanonised zinc provides significantly better coverage when compared to micronised zinc. The smaller particles clump less easily, forming a more even barrier.

Good for Skin Health

Studies suggest that zinc helps protect the skin's own anti-oxidant systems. Zinc oxide has also been used topically for thousands of years to reduce inflammation and aid in wound healing. In fact, zinc's the only sunscreen agent that's found naturally in the skin. That makes it ideal for patients with sensitivities or allergies.

Protection against UVA and UVB

UVB and UVA are absorbed differently, according to the differing chromophores in the skin's strata. On unprotected skin, around 70% of UVB is absorbed in the stratum corneum and 20% in the epidermis, while only 10% reaches the upper dermis. UVA rays penetrate deeper - up to 30% of UVA radiation is absorbed in the deep dermal tissue.

UVB is responsible for direct DNA damage in the epidermis as well as indirect damage to tissues through the production of free radicals. It the primary cause of sun-induced erythema and sunburn. UVA, with its dermal penetration, is responsible for increased free radical activity in the dermis. This leads to elastic and structural fibre changes as well as indirect damage to DNA. Over time, these changes contribute to wrinkles and abnormal texture, and hyperpigmentation.

UVA is on average 27.5 times more abundant than UVB, so although UVA photons cause less damage than UVB photons.
