Medical Skin MICRO-NEEDLING

What is skin micro-needling?
Skin micro-needling (also called Collagen Induction Therapy) is a procedure that uses tiny needles to penetrate the upper layers of the skin. This action causes a release of growth factors within the skin that promote the production of collagen, elastin and other substances. These substances are further enhanced with the use of topical vitamins and act to tighten and smooth the skin. It is the needling process alone that is the key to trigger stimulation of your own skin cell regeneration, ie, there is no substance injected into the skin.
Dermaroller will enhance the penetration of any skincare ingredient. 200 times more product delivery, dramatically giving value & results to your skincare regime.
How is the procedure performed?
The procedure is performed using a small devise called the Roll-CIT ® or Dermaroller ®.Firstly a topical anaesthetic is applied to the areas to be treated.
Once the skin is numb, the anaesthetic cream is removed and the entire surface of the skin is repeatedly treated with the devise causing very small needle pricks to the surface layer of the skin. This triggers a cascade of events within the skin and the process of stimulating collagen and elastin fibres has begun.
A topical vitamin serum will be applied to the skin immediately following the procedure. This is very important as Vitamin A, and C are delivered more readily via the channels that have been created by the needle.
What conditions can be treated with Skin Micro-needling?
Micro-needling using the Roll-CIT ® or Dermaroller ® can be used to treat loss of skin elasticity and fine lines on the face and neck. It can also be used to treat shallow depressed acne scars and mild hypertrophic scarring. How many treatments will I need?
Treatments are generally given as a series of three to six carried out every 4 to 6 weeks. What is the role of Vitamin A and C?
The use of Vitamin A cannot be overstressed and is essential to stimulate cell growth, the release of growth factors in the skin and the production of healthy new collagen.Collagen production has been shown to be boosted by preparing the skin with Vitamin A prior to the Micro-needling treatment. An enhanced state of collagen and elastin production is then maintained by continuing the topical application of a medical strength Vitamin A at home and throughout the series of treatments.
Depending on your skin and the condition to be treated you may be prescribed the medical form of Vitamin A (tretinoin) by your doctor, or you may be advised to use retinaldehyde or retinol (also effective grades of vitamin A).
It is important to know that Vitamin C also stimulates the production of collagen through DNA activity and that normal collagen cannot be produced without Vitamin C. For this reason you will be advised to apply both of these Vitamins daily throughout the treatment series.
How will my skin appear after the treatment?
There will be minimal pin point bleeding during the procedure and this will not be detectable by you once the skin has been cleaned and your serums applied.Immediately after the treatment, your skin will be quite pink and sunburnt in appearance. You may see many small, red, pin point dots on the skin. The pinkness usually subsides within 4 to 6 hours. You may experience some skin dryness for a few days following treatment.
You will easily be able to return to work and social life the day after the treatment.
How do I care for my skin at home after the treatment?
You can continue with your normal skin care regime. In addition you should apply Vitamin A and C to your skin as directed by your doctor or nurse. It is also imperative to apply a daily sunscreen to prevent further photo ageing of the skin by stopping damage of collagen and other skin structures by exposure to ultraviolet radiation.
You can begin use of the Cosmetic Home Roller to further enhance penetration of topical skincare into the skin as soon as your skin feels comfortable.
Are there any side effects?
Side effects are generally minimal. Temporary, prolonged redness or dryness may occur in particularly photo damaged skin and in skin that is not used to using topical Vitamin A. It is important to contact the clinic if this occurs. While skin needling will not make a cold sore occur, it is possible that it could make the infection worse. Your treatment will need to be delayed in the presence of a cold sore and it is important to notify your doctor or nurse if you feel the beginnings of an infection occurring.Email us today - reception@perthplasticsurgery.com
