Labioplasty

What is Labioplasty?
Labioplasty commonly refers to a reduction in the size of the labia minora. The reasons for the procedure are both aesthetic and functional. Some women may not like the appearance of the protruding labia and it may cause discomfort with activities such as riding or sexual intercourse.

What does the operation entail?
A labioplasty is usually performed under a general anesthetic as day case surgery. The excess labial tissue is excised and the wound is closed with dissolvable sutures. Post operatively there is some discomfort for a few days and patients are advised to wear a peri pad externally and to bathe in salt baths at least on a daily basis until the wound is healed. Sexual intercourse is to be avoided for the first two weeks. The sutures are dissolvable and they do not need to be removed.

There are very few complications with a labioplasty. Occasionally patients may develop a small haematoma or blood clot, or there may be a small wound breakdown, but these usually resolve of themselves. The rate of satisfaction with the procedure is generally high.
