Gynaecomastia

Overview

Male breast development is quite a common condition. It often first becomes apparent in puberty and can be associated with significant weight gain. It can be associated with certain medications or steroid usage. However in many cases there is no cause found for the condition.

The treatment of Gynaecomastia often involves liposuction of the breast area and direct excision of the central breast tissue via a small incision around the nipple. It is unusual to have to remove skin of the breast in gynaecomastia, except in extreme cases. It is performed as day case surgery under a general anaesthetic and the recovery period is in the order of 1-2 weeks. Bleeding or undercorrection are potential complications of this procedure.
